Moody, dramatic clouds underscore the intense power of the Antarctic landscape.

Sailing along the Antarctic coast near the end of my last expedition there we had several hours of challenging weather, and several of us were working on editing images, and so forth expecting a quiet day photographically. Glancing up that afternoon, I spotted this dramatic and quickly-changing light off the starboard, and grabbed my camera and ran, in shirt sleeves, to the deck outside. break in the clouds only persisted for a few minutes, and it was only after it faded that I realized how cold I was.
