In 2004 and 2005 I created a body of work, Signatures of the Sun, a series of images into small streams, with the widely-varying patterns of light reflecting off the water as the key element carrying through the series. I probably looked a bit odd to a lot of people, wandering along the edges of various creeks staring intently down. Today's throwback piece, Burble, was easily my my favorite of the series, and just as surely the most popular--this is my second best-selling image.
What got me to shoot this particualr scene was the array of color. This was taken downstream of Running Eagle Falls in Glacier National Park, that area is full of what I jokingly refer to as "traffic light geology", reds and yellows and greens drawing a stark contrast to California's theme of beige and grey, this particular location had an unusual pink rock as well. As I did with all the images of the Signatures series, I did a fair amount of shooting of this composition, both adjusting shutter speeds (knowing that the water and reflections would draw quite differently in longer exposures) and simply taking multiple exposures knowing the ripple patterns would vary. I love the fun of this process, how I am never quite sure what I'll end up with until I get down to sorting through the shoot.
